The career of Giambattista Tiepolo, a Venetian painter whose practice extended from altarpiece painting to large decorative schemes, is documented in Venice’s painters’ guild from 1717. In 1722, he delivers the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew for the church of San Stae, then receives commissions in Udine for the cathedral and the Patriarchal Palace. From 1732, he works on the Colleoni Chapel in Bergamo; the programme is later expanded to include scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist. In the 1720s and 1730s, his style evolves from tenebrism towards lighter colours and a luminosity that the sources describe as solar.
In 1719, he marries Cecilia Guardi. In 1750, he leaves for Würzburg with his sons, where Prince-Bishop Carl Philipp von Greiffenklau entrusts them with decorating the salon and the ceiling of the grand staircase of his residence; Tiepolo returns to Venice at the end of 1753. In 1757, he paints frescoes at the Villa Valmarana of San Sebastiano, near Vicenza. At the request of Charles III, he travels to Madrid with his sons in 1761. There, between 1762 and 1766, he paints frescoes for the Royal Palace and produces seven canvases commissioned for the church of Aranjuez.
