Jacobus Linthorst was a Dutch painter whose career unfolded in Amsterdam, where he died in 1815. He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1789 and taught the still-life painter Jan Evert Morel. His work centres on flowers and fruit, brought together in abundant compositions with strong colours. This practice continues the Dutch still-life tradition, inviting comparisons with Jan van Huysum and Linthorst’s contemporaries Jan van Os and Paul Theodor van Brussel. Flower paintings in the Fitzwilliam Museum and a fruit still life in the Rijksmuseum represent the two principal strands of his work. The arrangement of objects and the richness of plant forms provide the structure and visual character of these compositions.
