The French painter Eugène Henri Cauchois, born in Rouen and died in Paris, developed a practice in which still lifes occupy a central place: he specialised in compositions bringing together fruit, flowers and kitchen utensils, while also painting landscapes and seascapes. He trained at the École des beaux-arts de Paris and worked in the studios of Ferdinand Duboc and Alexandre Cabanel.
In 1876, he married Louise Ladevèze in Paris, with the painter Eugène Capelle as a witness. He stayed in Brussels in 1878–1879, then had a studio at 32, rue des Dames, in the 17th arrondissement of Paris; Marcellin Desboutin was his neighbour there. A practical detail also characterises his way of signing: he had made a habit of inscribing on his paintings the name of the month in which they had been made.
Cauchois made his debut at the Salon in 1874. He later exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1881, 1890, 1898, 1904 and 1908; having become a member in 1890, he received a third-class medal in 1898, followed by a second-class medal in 1904. In 1881, he presented a tray of flowers entitled « Collision » at the Salon de Bruxelles, and received a bronze medal at the Exposition universelle of 1900. Towards the end of his life, he turned to decorative painting and produced floral compositions.
Works by Cauchois are held in several French museums. The musée des Beaux-Arts d’Angers holds « Fleurs des champs et fruits », the musée Ingres de Montauban « Fleurs » and the musée Hyacinthe-Rigaud de Perpignan « Marine ». In Rouen, the musée des Beaux-Arts holds, among other works, « Collection d’horlogerie », « La Porte rose » and « Le train a passé ».
