August Lohr

Born : 1842Died : 1920Documented citizenships : Mexico · United States

August Lohr pursued an international career connecting landscape painting with panoramic spectacle. Trained in Munich from 1863, he began by painting Alpine scenes. Between 1879 and 1883 he assisted Louis Braun in producing battle panoramas. Subsequently recruited by William Wehner for the American Panorama Company, he left for the United States in 1885. In Milwaukee he jointly directed a team of painters with Friedrich Wilhelm Heine, working on subjects including Chattanooga and the Battle of Atlanta. Their own company, active from 1887 to 1890, took over the Wells Street studio. Settling in Mexico around 1890, Lohr returned to landscape, while working again for Wehner in San Francisco in 1899. His career combines individual production with extensive collaborative projects.
