Melchior Brassauw, born in Mechelen in 1709, was a Flemish painter active in Antwerp during the eighteenth century. His work includes portraits and genre scenes, particularly musical gatherings and social entertainments. He drew on subjects and models from the Netherlandish painting of the preceding century, continuing its interest in elegant conversation and figures shown engaged in their various occupations.
A Musical Company in the Rijksmuseum, a signed oil painting on panel, follows a composition by Gerard Pietersz. van Zijl. On a terrace, a woman tunes a lute while other figures hold a violin, a cello and a glass; sheet music lies on the table. The painting demonstrates the importance of social interaction and musical instruments within his work. The precise date of his death remains uncertain.
