Emilie Mediz-Pelikan

Born : 1861Died : 1908

Austro-Hungarian painter and lithographer, Emilie Mediz-Pelikan (1861–1908) developed her career across several European art centres, from Dachau and Knokke to Vienna and Dresden.

Born in Vöcklabruck, she spent time in Dachau, where she associated with the artists’ colony and met Adolf Hölzel and Fritz von Uhde. After a stay in Paris, she met up again in Knokke with Karl Mediz, whom she had previously met in Dachau; they both travelled to Vienna in 1891 and married there. The couple first settled in Krems an der Donau, where their daughter was born, and then decided in 1894 to move to Dresden. Their travels also took them to Tyrol, Italy and the Adriatic coast.

In 1898, Mediz-Pelikan took part in her first major exhibition at the Palais der Secession, as part of the Vienna Secession. She subsequently exhibited at the Internationale Kunstausstellung in Dresden in 1901. In 1903, she presented her work with Karl Mediz at an exhibition organised or supported by the Hagenbund. Two important exhibitions at the Künstlerhaus in Berlin are also recorded, with no dates specified.

Blühende Kastanien (Châtaigniers en fleurs) is held at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere. In 2019, a work by the artist was included in the exhibition City of Women: Female artists in Vienna from 1900 to 1938, presented at the Belvedere. Her work has also been the subject of publications and studies: Erich Tromayer published a book devoted to the artist in 1986, Daniela Nittenberg submitted a thesis on her early work in 1990, and Therese Backhausen presented a doctoral thesis on Emilie and Karl Mediz in 2008.
