Jacob Grimmer

Died : 1590

Jacob Grimmer belonged to the generation of Pieter Bruegel the Elder and became a master of Antwerp’s Guild of Saint Luke in 1547. His landscapes frequently take the seasons or months as their framework. His son Abel later continued this landscape practice, although their respective works must be distinguished.

In the Winter Landscape with a Village and Skaters in the Carmen Thyssen Collection, a frozen river leads into depth among houses, hunters and figures on the ice. The painting combines continuous spatial recession with atmospheric effects. Grimmer’s designs also circulated through prints: the Rijksmuseum preserves a landscape with a pond, engraved by Adriaen Collaert after his drawing, belonging to a series of twelve views around Antwerp.

This profile brings together identity references for Jacob Grimmer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
