Daniel Seiter, also known as Daniel Saiter, was a Vienna-born painter whose career unfolded principally in Italy. Trained in Venice and subsequently active in Rome, he worked within the culture of the Italian Baroque. In 1688 he moved to Turin to serve Duke Vittorio Amadeo II of Savoy. He remained involved in the court’s decorative projects until his death in 1705.
At the Palazzo Reale, his figure compositions were integrated into the architecture of the princely apartments. The ceiling of the duke’s bedroom depicts Diana gazing at the sleeping Endymion, surrounded by satyrs and putti. A preparatory drawing in the Royal Collection records this commission. His movement between Venice, Rome and Turin places Seiter among the artists who carried Baroque imagery into the residences of European rulers.
