Johann Emil Hünten, also known as Emil Hünten, was born in Paris on 19 January 1827. Described as a Prussian painter specialising in historical scenes, he also worked as a battle painter, illustrator and draughtsman. A biographical source indicates that he began studying at the Académie des beaux-arts in Paris in 1860, then continued his training at the Düsseldorf School of Painting. The Lempertz catalogue notes that he worked on the representation of horses from the time of his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy, under the direction of Wilhelm Camphausen.
The same catalogue links the realism of his paintings made later in Berlin to scenes he had observed during visits. The subjects mentioned in the entries range from battles of the era of Frederick the Great to contemporary conflicts, for which he also produced commissioned works. Among the works listed is *Soldier and Shepherd*, an oil on canvas dated 1865, measuring 73.5 × 66 cm. A wood engraving entitled *Frederick II breaks into Silesia* is dated around 1875. Another entry describes an unfinished sketch of an eighteenth-century cavalry battle, executed in oil on canvas.
The Lempertz catalogue also documents an oil on canvas measuring 53 × 47 cm, entitled *Kaiser Wilhelm I., Fürst Otto von Bismarck sowie Graf Helmuth von Moltke zu Pferd*. The work is signed at the lower left “E. Hünten 94..”. According to the catalogue, it was made about twenty years after the victorious winter referred to in its text.
