Alexandra Makovskaïa, who lived from 1837 to 1915, belonged to the Russian Makovsky family, several generations of which worked in the arts. Her brothers Konstantin, Nikolai and Vladimir were also painters. She concentrated on landscape and learned from Konstantin and Vladimir without attending a professional art school. Her own artistic activity developed from the 1860s.
She began exhibiting in 1866, including at the Imperial Academy, and subsequently participated in exhibitions of the Wanderers, the Moscow Society of Art Lovers and the Russian watercolourists. The museum in Plyos holds In the Forest, a small oil painting on wood made in 1874 and acquired in 1975. It situates her work within the landscape painting of later nineteenth-century Russia, the field with which she remains principally associated.
This profile brings together identity references for Alexandra Makovskaya and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
