Born in Paris in 1839 to English merchant parents who had settled in the capital for their business, Alfred Sisley chose painting after returning to France in 1860 and obtaining his family’s permission to give up the family business. As early as March 1863, he left Gleyre’s studio with three companions to work outdoors, notably in the Forest of Fontainebleau, at Barbizon and in the surrounding area. Landscapes and waterside scenes hold a lasting place in his work: the latter remained among his favourite subjects until the end of his life.
His places of work reflect this attention to landscape. Settled in Bougival in the late 1860s, he stayed with Monet in Argenteuil in early 1872 and painted a group of landscapes at Villeneuve-la-Garenne at that time. In Louveciennes, he produced, among other works, *Premières neiges à Louveciennes*, featuring the rue de Voisins in the hamlet where he lived; in 1875, he settled near the Abreuvoir in Marly-le-Roi, where he remained until the end of the winter of 1877–1878. Monet and Pissarro introduced him to Paul Durand-Ruel, whom he met in January 1872. The dealer bought fifty-nine paintings from him between 1872 and 1873. In 1873, Sisley joined Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas and Morisot in founding the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers. The following year, at the first exhibition of the Impressionist painters, held at Nadar’s from 15 April to 15 May, he presented six landscapes.
Several works from this period are now held in public collections: *Le Pont de Villeneuve-la-Garenne* (1872) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and *Passerelle d’Argenteuil* (1872) and *Le Chemin de la Machine, Louveciennes* (1873) at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. Sisley died in Moret-sur-Loing in 1899.
