Katharina Grosse’s practice combines studio painting with large-scale in situ interventions: painting is not limited to the canvas but can also cover built or natural environments. In these works, she explores sensory experiences, giving a central place to material, colour and their combinations. From 1998, the use of industrial paints applied with a spray gun marked a development in her work. Her works reveal different relationships between painting and support. Das Bett (2004) is made in acrylic on walls, floors and various objects; Wunderbild (2018), also in acrylic, is painted on fabric. From 2020, she also works with slashed canvases and natural elements such as algae and branches, as in a 2021 work entitled Sans titre, described as acrylic on canvas.

Born in 1961 in Freiburg im Breisgau, the German artist studied at the Kunstakademie Münster from 1982 to 1986 with Norbert Tadeusz and Johannes Brus. She continued her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf between 1986 and 1990, studying under Gotthard Graubner. She lives and works in Berlin and New Zealand. Her career has also been marked by several distinctions: the Villa Romana Prize in 1992, the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting in 2003 and the Oskar Schlemmer Prize in 2014. Presentations of her work include Rockaway, created in 2016 as part of MoMA PS1’s Rockaway! series in New York, followed by It Wasn’t Us at the Hamburger Bahnhof–Museum für Gegenwart–Berlin in 2020–2021. The exhibition Studio Paintings 1988-2022 was subsequently presented at the Kemper Art Museum in 2022–2023, the Kunstmuseum Bern in 2023 and the Kunstmuseum Bonn in 2023–2024. Her works are held, among other collections, by the Albertina in Vienna, the Centre Pompidou, K21 – Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Her studio paintings from 1988 to 2022 are also the subject of a publication edited by Sabine Eckmann and published in 2022.
