German artist Karl Fred Dahmen, born in Stolberg in 1917 and deceased in Bavaria in 1981, is represented by works shown in exhibitions in Europe, Asia and the United States. In 1958, he took part in the exhibition “Art of the 21st Century” in Charleroi, organised as part of the World’s Fair, followed by documenta II in 1959. In 1961, his name appeared in “Réalités nouvelles” at the Musée d’art moderne de Paris; the following year, his works were presented at the Biennial Exhibition of Prints at the National Museum of Tokyo.
The recorded presentations continued at Mathildenhöhe-Darmstadt, as part of the New Darmstadt Secession in 1967, and then at the first International Biennial of Graphic Arts in Fredrikstad, Norway, in 1976. An exhibition at the Art Center in Los Angeles is also recorded in 1981.
Among the documented works is “Komposition mit einer Figur”, a mixed-media composition, signed lower right and measuring 51 × 41 cm. The lot, whose published provenance lists Galerie Bernard in Grenchen followed by a Swiss private collection, was sold for CHF 3,000 against an estimate of CHF 3,500.
