Ilya Repin (1844–1930), born in the territory of present-day Ukraine, occupies an important place in the realist painting of the Russian Empire. His pictures combine social observation, history and attention to individuals. Barge Haulers on the Volga, painted between 1870 and 1873, gives each worker a distinct presence within a collective scene. Zaporozhian Cossacks Writing a Letter to the Turkish Sultan extends this construction of narrative through gestures and expressions.
A portraitist of Tolstoy and Mussorgsky, Repin was interested in cultural figures as well as popular life. His compositions reveal tensions between people and power without erasing individual stories. He settled in Kuokkala, in the Grand Duchy of Finland, in 1903 and remained after the border closed in 1918. His connections with Finland are documented in the Ateneum collection.
This profile brings together identity references for Ilya Repin and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
