The Mexican painter Diego Rivera was born in Guanajuato and trained in Mexico City before travelling to Europe. In Paris he explored Cubism; in Italy he studied fresco painting. His return to Mexico initiated a monumental practice connected with the changes following the Revolution. Popular traditions and pre-Columbian cultures became central to his conception of art intended for a public audience.
His murals arrange labour, social conflict and national history into extensive compositions. Peasants and workers become active participants in collective narratives. For his 1931 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Rivera produced portable frescoes, including Agrarian Leader Zapata. This solution brought the scale and ambitions of mural painting into the museum while retaining the political force of his subjects and their emphasis on ordinary people's lives.
This profile brings together identity references for Diego Rivera and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
