Josef Anton Strassgschwandtner (1826–1881) makes horses and soldiers the principal actors in his genre scenes. Trained at the Vienna Academy between 1843 and 1845, he often favours small formats, precise execution and luminous colours. Hunting and rural life broaden this repertoire beyond military subjects.
Cavalry Battle in the Orient, an oil on canvas of around 1880 at the Wien Museum, brings together his military and animal interests. The same museum holds two distinct versions of Painter and Billy Goat: an oil on wood of around 1865 showing an outdoor setting, and a watercolour with pencil drawing of 1875 associated with the studio. Moving between these supports demonstrates how a familiar subject can recur in different spatial contexts alongside his depictions of combat.
This profile brings together identity references for Josef Anton Strassgschwandtner and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
