Josef Albers (1888–1976), also referred to by the first name Joseph, is presented as a German-American designer, painter, teacher and typographer.

The Art Institute of Chicago lists several works from the Homage to the Square series: Light Passage (1956), Yellow Signal (1962) and New Light (1967). Wide Light, dated 1962, is listed there as the first plate in Homage to the Square: Ten Works by Josef Albers.
