Johannes Kahrs, born in Bremen in 1965, is a German artist who studied at Berlin’s Hochschule der Künste. His practice combines painting and drawing with the collection of images from cinema, newspapers, advertising and his own photographs. He removes these documents from their original contexts, crops them and transforms them, suspending the narratives to which they initially appeared to belong and allowing alternative readings to emerge.
The human body is central to this work: faces, torsos and gestures often appear fragmented or blurred. Contrasts of light and colour give these images an ambiguous physical presence, combining intimacy with unease. Interiors and still lifes extend the same tension. Solo exhibitions at Centre PasquArt in Biel, Kunsthalle Nürnberg and FRAC Île-de-France have presented different stages of this continuing investigation.
This profile brings together identity references for Johannes Kahrs and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
