Johannes Bartholomäus Duntze

Born : 1823Died : 1895Documented citizenships : Germany

Johannes Duntze developed a landscape practice attentive to variations in light, from Alpine terrain to Norwegian fjords, as well as winter scenes and the valleys of the Rhine, Lahn and Moselle. The biographical notice characterises his technique by its great precision, thin application of paint and a manner close to that of the Romantics; it also notes his predilection for backlighting. His winter landscapes, often set in Holland, may incorporate architecture and genre scenes, while Alpine and Norwegian landscapes form his other major subject groups.

The son of the Bremen pastor and historian Johann Hermann Duntze and Elisabeth Ulrichs, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1839 to 1842, then in Berlin with Wilhelm Krause, in Antwerp from 1851 to 1855, and in Geneva with Alexandre Calame. A study trip took him to Norway in 1845; he went to Paris in 1855, settled in Düsseldorf the following year and joined the artists’ association Malkasten in 1858. His other study trips took him to Switzerland, Tyrol, Belgium and Holland; paintings connected with Switzerland are recorded as early as 1852. He took part in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad, and regularly participated in exhibitions of the Berlin Academy between 1866 and 1888.

Among the recorded works is *View over a Fjord in the Morning Light*, an oil on canvas signed and dated 1874, which treats the Norwegian landscape explicitly in relation to the morning light. The Museum Kunst der Westküste holds *Norwegian Landscape, Party from the Nordfjord*, a canvas signed and dated 1882; an inscription on the reverse indicates that it was presented at the Hanover art exhibition in 1883 and purchased for 500 marks. A winter landscape with skaters on a frozen lake, painted in oil and dated 1892, offers another example of his recurring subjects. The biographical notice mentions works acquired by museums in Hamburg, Hanover, Stuttgart, Mainz, Bern, Geneva and Sydney.
