The German-Dutch painter Johann Bernhard Klombeck (1815–1893), originally from Kleve, set his work within the landscapes of the Lower Rhine and neighbouring Netherlands. These territories provide the subjects for paintings in which the landscape takes centre stage. He depicts valleys, rivers and open spaces populated by livestock and a few figures. His landscapes are often treated in a Romantic manner: gnarled oaks or castle ruins draw the eye, while dramatic cloud formations are described as a characteristic feature of his work.
Born and deceased in Kleve, he was the son of Heinrich Klombeck, a master tailor, and Marianne Tinthoff, the half-sister of the painter Matthias Tinthoff. The latter taught him the basics of painting and gave him his first lessons. In 1834, Klombeck became a pupil of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek in Kleve. His first exhibitions took place in Kleve and Nijmegen. Between 1843 and 1856, he also exhibited in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Dresden and Berlin. After Koekkoek’s death in 1862, he succeeded him as head of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kleve. He also collaborated artistically with Eugène Verboeckhoven, Alexander Joseph Daiwaille and Willem Bodeman.
An auction catalogue describes, among other works, Waldrand am Niederrhein mit Bauernpaar, an oil on canvas measuring 41.5 × 52.5 cm, signed and dated “1849(?)”. The catalogue reports that Guido de Werd confirmed its authenticity on the basis of photographs.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Bernhard Klombeck and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
