The French abstract painter Jean Degottex (1918–1988) turned to abstraction from 1948 onwards and developed a gestural form of painting. After leaving school at the age of fifteen, he moved in libertarian circles and took part in drawing and painting sessions at independent academies, notably the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. During his military service in Tunisia and then Algeria, from 1939 to 1941, he painted his first figurative works, inspired by Fauvism.
He first exhibited at Denise René’s gallery in 1949, joined Jean Fournier’s Galerie Kléber in 1955, and then Maurice d’Arquian’s Galerie internationale d’art contemporain in 1959. His career was marked by the Kandinsky Prize, which he received in 1951, and later by the Grand Prix national de peinture, awarded in 1981. From 1956 to 1963, he often worked on a large scale and in series: the 18 Vides (1959), the Alliances (1960), the 7 Métasignes (1961) and Jshet (1962) are among the bodies of work from this period. Métasphère (1966) and Horsphères (1967) are among the subsequent series; from 1966 onwards, the artist also worked in Gordes, in the Vaucluse, on several occasions.
With the Papiers-Report (1977), Degottex explored transfer by folding one half of a sheet onto the other, a technique he returned to in the Lignes-Report and Plis-Report series (1978). His last major works include the Lignes-Bois (1985) and the Contre-Lignes Bois (1986), in shades of white, grey or blue-grey. In 1978, the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris dedicated the exhibition Degottex. Toiles, papiers, graphiques, 1962-1978 to him. For a solo exhibition at Sénanque Abbey in Gordes, he created a series of canvases known as Déplis in 1979. He also took part in Documenta II in Kassel in 1959 and the XXXII Venice Biennale in 1964.
