Jean-Pierre Pincemin

Born : 1944Died : 2005Documented citizenships : France

Before becoming an artist, Jean-Pierre Pincemin works as a lathe operator, particularly in the precision engineering industry. From 1967, encouraged by the gallery owner Jean Fournier, he makes constructions from discarded industrial materials, which he presents at the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture. In his early investigations, he works on unstretched canvas without a brush, transferring impressions of materials such as bricks, corrugated sheets or wire mesh onto it. He also cuts out and glues canvas shapes—squares, diamonds or ladders—that have been dyed beforehand.

In 1969, he organises an exhibition with Claude Viallat entitled « La peinture en question » at the École spéciale d’architecture in Paris. After taking part in the main exhibitions of Supports-Surfaces, he later distances himself from his fellow artists and follows his own path from 1973 onwards.

In 1994, a public commission for the Chalcographie du Louvre results in two aquatint engravings, « The Young Girl and Death, plate C » and « The Young Girl and Death, plate F ». The following year, in Liège, he creates on the ceiling of the Balloir hospice a depiction of the creation of the world that is faithful to the biblical account. He teaches for many years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Poitiers, and then at the one in Angers. In 2010, the Musée d’art moderne de Céret dedicates a retrospective to him in collaboration with La Piscine in Roubaix and the museum in Angers.
