German painter and art teacher Rudolf Ausleger (1897–1974) first trained at the Schule Reimann, then at the Staatliche Kunstschule, where he studied with Georg Tappert and Bernhard Hasler. In 1916, while serving as a soldier during the First World War, he met Georg Tappert, Karl Jakob Hirsch and Lothar Homeyer in Berlin; they would go on to become painters of the Novembergruppe. Ausleger also joined the group and took part in numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad.
From 1921, he taught at secondary schools in Berlin as well as at the Schule Reimann; from 1949 to 1967, he was a lecturer at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Berlin. Under the Nazi regime, his opportunities to exhibit were curtailed and his works were classified as “degenerate”. A large part of his output was destroyed in the bombing raids of the Second World War.
Works by Ausleger were presented by Kunst am Wedding in 1974 and then by Galerie Nierendorf in Berlin in 1984, in an exhibition that also brought together other twentieth-century artists. A pencil drawing entitled Stillleben, dated 1924, attests to his work on paper: signed and dated “R. Ausleger, 24” at the lower right, it measures 28 × 39 cm.
This profile brings together identity references for Rudolf Ausleger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
