František Kupka

From 1911 onward, Kupka paints works with no reference to the world of objects. Verticality and circular movement are among his lines of inquiry: the Centre Pompidou dates the beginning of his exploration of whirling motion to 1908, with *Petite fille au ballon*, through interlacing curves formed by the moving balloon. His training takes him from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he receives his diploma in the studio of František Sequens, to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, which admits him in 1892. Settling in Paris in 1896, he earns his living there as an illustrator for newspapers and creates posters for cabarets; in 1906, he settles in Puteaux.

His first solo exhibition takes place in 1921 at the Povolozky Gallery in Paris. In 1931, Kupka takes part in the founding of the Abstraction-Création movement, which he leaves in 1934; in 1936, he participates in the exhibition “Cubism and Abstract Art” at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Enlisting as a volunteer in August 1914, he serves on the front in the Somme; in 1915, after falling seriously ill, he is evacuated to Paris. Appointed professor at the Prague School of Fine Arts in 1923, he remains in Paris and is entrusted with responsibility for Czech scholarship holders. From 1939 to 1945, he is a refugee in Beaugency with his wife, Eugénie Straub.
