The French landscape painter and printmaker Victor Alfred Paul Vignon (1847–1909), associated with the Impressionist group, devotes most of his work to landscape. He studies the old masters at the Louvre and, around 1869, receives lessons from Camille Corot; Adolphe-Félix Cals also offers him advice. The first stages of his landscape practice take him from Clamart to Bougival, then to La Celle-Saint-Cloud. These places appear in works such as Saulaie à Bougival, dated 1877, Le Chemin de la plaine à Bougival and La Route de la Jonchère à La Celle-Saint-Cloud.
From around 1878, Vignon works in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he is in contact with Camille Pissarro, Armand Guillaumin and Paul Cézanne; he also frequents Pontoise and Jouy-le-Comte. Several titles locate his subjects precisely in this area: Chemin de Chaponval (1881), La Côte Saint-Nicolas à Auvers (dated 1882 in this list, but 1883 in the Copenhagen collection listing) and Masures à Auvers (1883). Country paths, houses grouped in a valley, haystacks, orchards and hamlets are among the subjects that shape his work. Landscapes held in public collections extend these geographical reference points: the musée d’Orsay holds, among other works, Chemin des Frileuses à Evecquemont (1885) and Paysage à Auvers-sur-Oise, maisons dans le vallon (c. 1880), while La Côte Saint-Nicolas à Auvers (1883) is held at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen and Le Hameau de Valhermé (1880) at the musée Bonnat-Helleu in Bayonne.
In 1878, he exhibits Les Châtaigniers un soir d'hiver and La Seine à Bougival un soir de printemps at the Salon de Paris. A retrospective of his work is presented at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris from 2 to 30 April 1901. His practice also includes printmaking, particularly etching: La Vache à Auvers-sur-Oise appears in L’Estampe originale in 1893, and Nature morte (1894) is described as an etching and aquatint. The musée d’art moderne André-Malraux in Le Havre also holds a work titled Pommes et pichet. An exhibition catalogue devoted to the artist, written by Christophe Duvivier and titled Victor Vignon, 1847-1909, is published in 2002 on the occasion of an exhibition at the musée de Pontoise.
This profile brings together identity references for Victor Vignon and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
