Ida Kerkovius

The German painter and weaver Ida Kerkovius, also described as German-Baltic, pursued a practice combining painting and textile arts. At the age of eighteen, she began training at a private school of painting and drawing in Riga, completing it in 1899. She then studied with the painter Adolf Hölzel in Dachau and later in Stuttgart, for five months. From 1920, at the Bauhaus, she attended the preliminary course of Johannes Itten and Georg Muche and the art classes of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, then joined the weaving workshop led by Gunta Stölzl.
After returning to Stuttgart in 1924, she taught there and continued her weaving practice. In 1930, she held her first major solo exhibition at the Württembergischer Kunstverein. From 1934 to 1939, she travelled each summer to Norway, Belgium, France, Bulgaria, Italy and Latvia. The bombing of Stuttgart in March 1944 destroyed her studio and many works; few of her works from before 1945 survive. After the war, she created stained-glass windows for Stuttgart City Hall in 1955 and for the prayer room of the University Hospital in Tübingen in 1958; her work also includes knotted carpets, made during this period and thereafter. Among the documented works is Abstrakte Komposition, a pastel on handmade paper measuring 22 × 13 cm, monogrammed “IK” at the lower left and presented by Lempertz under this title.
