Born in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Georg Baselitz is also known as Hans-Georg Kern. In 1956, he moved to East Berlin and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, from which he was expelled for “political immaturity”; he then continued his training in West Berlin. In 1961, he adopted the name Georg Baselitz, in reference to his hometown.
From the late 1960s, he developed the motif of the inverted image, in which figures are depicted upside down. Works by the artist listed by the Art Institute of Chicago include Woodman (Waldarbeiter), dated 1969, as well as two earlier works: Untitled (Saxonian Landscape), from 1964, and Untitled (Sex with Dumplings), from 1963. In the late 1970s, Baselitz also turned to sculpture; his first attempt in this field was Model for a Sculpture (1979–1980), a painted wooden sculpture.
His exhibitions in the 1970s included presentations in Mannheim, Hamburg, Kassel and Amsterdam, as well as participation in the São Paulo Biennial. He later taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and the Academy of Fine Arts in West Berlin. In 1993, he designed the stage set for Harrison Birtwistle’s opera Punch and Judy in Amsterdam. In 1995, exhibitions devoted to his work were presented at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Washington and Los Angeles.
