Consalvo Carelli

Born : 1818Died : 1900

The Italian painter Consalvo Carelli, born and deceased in Naples, belongs to the Neapolitan tradition of the veduta and is associated with the Scuola di Posillipo. Landscapes, city views and panoramas of his native city are key points of reference in his career. His family environment was also shaped by painting: his father, Raffaele, taught him the fundamentals before he continued his training with William Leicht. His brother Gabriele and his son Giuseppe were also painters. He exhibited at the Museo Borbonico in Naples from the age of twelve. In 1833, his painting Piazza della Vicaria earned him a second-class silver medal and was subsequently purchased by the queen.

In 1837, two views of Naples and its surroundings — Vue de Naples avec la tour de la Poudrière and Vue de Cava — were sold to the king and kept at the royal palace. After settling in Rome, Carelli painted the Roman countryside, genre scenes devoted to popular life and Neapolitan panoramas. These works were executed in oil tempera or watercolour. He then stayed in Paris, where he received a gold medal at the Salon international des arts for three consecutive years, from 1842 to 1844. That same year, he returned to settle in Naples and took part in important exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1845, the Russian ambassador in Naples commissioned him, for Emperor Nicholas I, to paint two large canvases depicting the city from the Royal Gardens of Portici and from the Camaldolese monastery. They are now held at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.

His work was not limited to landscape painting. During his stay in Rome, he met Massimo d’Azeglio; he also knew Alexandre Dumas and illustrated his book De Naples à Rome. He also produced an album devoted to banditry, held at the Royal Library of Turin. In 1860, he took part in the Battle of the Volturno. He gave painting lessons to Queen Margaret and was appointed a member of the Academy of Saint Luke in 1866. The works mentioned include a Landscape near Naples with the Island of Capri in the Background, dated 1851, and Il bosco di Fontainebleau, an oil painting on paper mounted on canvas, measuring 40 × 56 cm.
