The German painter Hubert Berke, born in 1908 and deceased in 1979, develops a body of work that includes both abstract paintings and book illustrations. He studies philosophy and art history in Königsberg and Münster, then continues his training at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, where he studies under Paul Klee from 1932 to 1933. Called up for military service from 1939 to 1945, he is a prisoner of war.
His work as an illustrator leads him to illustrate books by Ernest Hemingway as well as Jean-Paul Sartre’s The Flies. An exhibition of his work is recorded at the Cologne Kunstverein in 1958. In 1960, he teaches at the Technical Institute of Aachen.
