Chang Ta-chien

Born : 1899Died : 1983Documented citizenships : Taiwan

Chang Dai-chien, also known as Zhang Daqian (1899–1983), combines the study of earlier painting with material experimentation. From 1941 he stays at Dunhuang, copying the murals of the Mogao caves. This engagement with historical models informs a practice in which colour assumes an essential role.

Pine, Plum, and Fungus of Immortality (1923), an ink and colour painting on paper at the Smithsonian Institution, names Huang Quan and Shen Zhou in its inscription; its colours also recall Chinese woven tapestries. During the 1960s, his splashed ink and colour bring landscape closer to abstraction. Approach of the Storm (1967), at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, retains paper within a framed panel: landscape remains a setting for the transformation of traditional artistic means.

This profile brings together identity references for Chang Ta-chien and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
