The Korean artist Suh Se Ok (1929–2020) renewed ink painting through the tools of the literati tradition. Working under the name Sanjeong, he explored the possibilities of dots, lines and gestures on mulberry paper. Mungnimhoe, the group he initiated, held its first exhibition in 1960 to seek new directions for Korean painting. Traditional materials became the basis of an experimental practice.
In the People series, human silhouettes are reduced to a few movements of the brush and can form chains of connected figures. The 2003 example held in Houston demonstrates this economy of line. Person, at the Cleveland Museum of Art, also evokes the Chinese characters for “big” and “person”. Between writing and image, ink makes bodily presence and the energy of movement tangible.
