Hermann Stenner (1891–1914), born in Bielefeld, belonged to the younger generation of German Expressionism. After attending the schools of Heinrich Knirr in Munich and Hans von Hayek in Dachau, he entered the Stuttgart Academy in 1910. He initially studied with Christian Landenberger before joining Adolf Hölzel’s composition class in 1911.
His painting rapidly developed towards intense colours and simplified forms across portraits, landscapes and religious subjects. In 1914, together with Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister, he executed a mural cycle for the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne, now destroyed. Volunteering at the beginning of the First World War, he was killed in action near Iłów in December 1914, aged twenty-three. The Kunsthalle Bielefeld preserves an archive dedicated to his work.
This profile brings together identity references for Hermann Stenner and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
