Hermann Kern (1838–1912) was born in Liptóújvár, now Liptovský Hrádok in Slovakia, and died in Maria Enzersdorf near Vienna. A physician’s son, he took drawing lessons in Levoča and Prague before studying with Carl Rahl at the Vienna Academy. A Hungarian scholarship brought him to Düsseldorf in 1867, and he continued his training in Munich in 1870.
Initially working as a portrait and genre painter in Budapest, Kern settled permanently in Vienna in 1877. His interior scenes favour people absorbed in everyday activities, often elderly men, with close attention to detail and anecdotal incident. He also painted a ceiling decoration for the theatre in Szeged in 1885. His daughter Pauline subsequently became a painter herself, specialising principally in portraits and landscapes.
This profile brings together identity references for Hermann Kern and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
