Henri Michaux

Henri Michaux, a poet, writer and painter born in Namur and who died in Paris, pursued writing and the graphic arts in parallel: he took an interest in painting as early as 1925, while his work was first presented in 1937. After studying at the Collège Saint-Michel in Brussels, he initially turned to medicine, which he soon abandoned; he went to sea in 1920 and 1921, and the discovery of Lautréamont then prompted him to write. From 1922, he contributed to the avant-garde journal Le Disque vert, joining its editorial committee in 1923. His first books include Cas de folie circulaire (1922) and Qui je fus (1927).
His graphic practice encompasses watercolour, pencil, gouache, engraving and ink; calligraphy also features in many of his works. The book Peintures: sept poèmes et seize illustrations, published in Paris by G. L. M. in 1939, bears witness to the proximity of his two creative fields. Un barbare en Asie (1933) followed a journey to Asia. Later, Misérable Miracle (1956) took the form of an account linked to his experiences with mescaline. The works mentioned include Sans titre (1948), Six dessins pour « Mouvements » (1949), Sans titre (1951) and Dessin mescalinien (1955). The Art Institute of Chicago catalogue also records an untitled work dated around 1959 and another from Pour Jorn (1976). In 2006, Michaux was among the artists brought together at the Musée du Luxembourg for the exhibition L’Envolée lyrique, Paris 1945-1956.
