The French painter and printmaker Henri Manguin (1874–1949) practised both painting and printmaking: etchings, drypoints and lithographs form another facet of his work. After leaving the Lycée Colbert in 1889 to devote himself to painting, he enrolled at the École des arts décoratifs and, from 1894, attended Gustave Moreau’s studio at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. He exhibited at the B. Weill gallery and at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1897, before taking part in the Salon des indépendants for the first time in 1902. At the 1905 Salon d’automne, five of his canvases were shown in the room associated with the Fauves. His painting combines rigorous construction with bold colours and simplified forms, without going as far as distortion. Pure colours, juxtaposed without gradation, also characterise his pictorial language.
In 1899, Manguin married Jeanne Carette, who became his sole model, with few exceptions. His first experiments in printmaking, made in the 1900s, depict his family. Works held in public collections include Les Images (1905), at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, and La Sieste (1905), at the Courtauld in London. During the First World War, he lived in Lausanne. Later, the exhibition “Manguin, la volupté de la couleur” was presented at the Musée des impressionnismes in Giverny in 2017, and then at the Fondation de l’Hermitage in Lausanne in 2018. A catalogue raisonné of his painted work, compiled by Marie-Caroline Sainsaulieu under the direction of Lucile and Claude Manguin, was published by Ides et Calendes in 1980.
