László Moholy-Nagy

Born : 1895Died : 1946Documented citizenships : Hungary · United States

László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946), born in Hungary, made experimentation a shared principle across painting, photography, film and design. Settling in Berlin in 1920, he embraced Constructivism and investigated transparency, overlapping planes and light. His photograms generated images without a camera by exposing objects directly on a light-sensitive surface.

Appointed to the Bauhaus in 1923, he combined teaching, material research and reflection on relationships between art and industry. Following periods in the Netherlands and England, he directed the New Bauhaus in Chicago in 1937 and opened the School of Design there in 1939. Composition, dated November 1945, combines oil crayon, pencil and collage. This work on paper demonstrates the continuity of his visual practice alongside his educational activity into his final years.

This profile brings together identity references for László Moholy-Nagy and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
