The German painter and printmaker Heinrich Steiner pursued a path spanning painting, stage design and teaching, from Germany to Italy. Born in Kaiserslautern in 1911, he first took courses at the School of Applied Arts in Altona, then studied stage design in Hamburg and Berlin from 1927 to 1929. He subsequently worked at the Gärtnerplatz Theatre in Munich and continued his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Karl Caspar between 1932 and 1934. In 1938, he left Germany for Florence and joined the circle of German artists in Italy. There he studied with Felice Carena at the Academy of Florence. He exhibited his paintings in the city in 1939, followed by further exhibitions in Venice and Milan.
In 1946, Steiner received the foreign artist prize «Premio Colomba» at the Venice Biennale. He subsequently signed a contract with the Venetian art dealer Carlo Cardazzo, which was not renewed in 1949. The following year, he married Giuliana Toti in Florence, then returned to Germany, where he taught art and drawing. From 1959 to 1974, he taught painting in Frankfurt am Main. In 1974, he returned to Italy and lived and worked in Rome and Lerici. In Rome, the L’attico esse arte gallery devoted an exhibition to him in 1983, presented as covering his entire oeuvre. Steiner died in Rome in 2009.
A work documented by Lempertz, Landschaft an der Riviera, is an oil on canvas measuring 69 × 80 cm, dated before 1990 and signed «H Steiner» at the lower left. Its stated provenance leads from the artist’s studio in Rome to a private collection in northern Germany. The Lempertz catalogue also refers to two exhibition catalogues from Galerie Koch in Hanover: Von Rom bis Lerici, published in 2006, and Heinrich Steiner (1911–2009), published in 2011.
