A marine painter, Heinrich Petersen-Angeln depicts the landscapes of the Baltic and North Seas, as well as ports such as Vlissingen and Harlingen. Born in Westerholz on 4 April 1850, he dies in Düsseldorf on 23 April 1906. His birth name is Heinrich Wilhelm Petersen. On his arrival in Düsseldorf in 1883, he adds “Angeln”, the name of the peninsula on which his native village is situated, to distinguish himself from a namesake who adopts the name Heinrich Petersen-Flensburg.
From 1879 to 1883, he studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts under Eugen Dücker. In 1882, he is part of the artists’ colony at Egernsund Sogn, where he meets other German and foreign painters. His travels take him to Belgium, France, Italy and Norway. Until the 1890s, his work meets with some success, particularly among a conservative audience.
