A film and theatre actor as well as a draughtsman, Roland Caillaux pursued two distinct practices. He lived from 1905 to 1977. His civil name was Roland Caillaud, with a “d”, but he signed as Caillaux, with an “x”. In Paris, he lived on rue de l’Ancienne-Comédie and had his studio on rue Boulard.
The Au Bonheur du Jour gallery describes a differentiated signature system: the name Caillaux for non-erotic drawings and, for erotic drawings, a small spider’s web marked with an “x”, placed in various parts of the sheet. According to the same gallery, his erotic works, described as very rare, circulated discreetly within his circle of acquaintances between 1940 and 1960. In 1945, he illustrated «vingt lithographies pour un livre que j’ai lu», a collection of poems attributed to Jean Genet, published in an edition of 115 copies. A signed drawing, Portrait de Christian Bérard dans son atelier, dated 1937 and executed in graphite on paper, was also offered in a sale.
This profile brings together identity references for Roland Caillaux and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
