Henri Lebasque

Henri Lebasque, a French painter born in Champigné in 1865 and deceased in Le Cannet in 1937, trained in Paris. In 1885, he went to Paris to study at the École des beaux-arts. At the beginning of his Paris career, Lebasque took part in the annual exhibitions of the société de l’art and the salons of Paris. Bailly Gallery’s biography reports that his work was shaped by his relationships with Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, who were associated with the Nabis and the Intimist groups. Later, he adopted the Fauves’ style. In 1903, according to Bailly Gallery’s biography, he founded the Salon d’Automne with Henri Matisse. In 1924, he settled in Le Cannet, where he remained until his death.

Une Laveuse, dated 1906, is described in the Schuler catalogue as an oil on canvas, signed at the lower left and measuring 73 × 60.5 cm. For this work, the catalogue cites Paul Vitry’s monograph, published in Paris in 1928, as well as Denise Bazetoux’s catalogue raisonné, published in 2008, which lists it under the title “une laveuse”. Another point of reference documented by auction catalogues is Nu assis au pied du lit, le Cannet, dated 1929. Auction catalogues document works by Lebasque dated 1906 and 1929.
