Hans Wulz

Born : 1909Died : 1985Documented citizenships : Austria

The Austrian painter Hans Wulz, born in Landeck, Tyrol, in 1909 and deceased in Vienna in 1985, developed a practice that combined painting, drawing and sculpture. From 1924 to 1928, he trained in wood sculpture under Bruno Berger while also taking painting and drawing classes with Valentin Janschek and Hans Piffrader at the Staatsgewerbeschule in Salzburg. He continued his studies at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna, where he was a student from 1931 to 1933.

During the Second World War, he was at the front from 1940 to 1944 and was subsequently taken prisoner by the British. After the war, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Christian Ludwig Martin from 1948 to 1952. He then undertook study trips to Sicily, Sardinia, Switzerland and Germany. His career was recognised with the Staatspreis in 1949 and, in 1950, a second honorary prize for his oeuvre at the annual exhibition of the Kunstverein Salzburg; he received the Wiener Künstlerhaus’s Grand Gold Medal of Honour in 1959 and the title of professor in 1962.

The documented body of work comprises several hundred oil paintings, as well as watercolours, sketches and sculptures. Among the documented works is Die Befreiten, an oil on canvas from 1941, measuring approximately 140 × 150 cm, held at the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna. Salzburg, Blick vom Kapuzinerberg, an oil on canvas from 1979 measuring 66 × 100 cm, is in private ownership. Wulz also created works for the function room of the St. Elisabeth rectory and the Augustinian Church in Salzburg, as well as the ceiling fresco in the function room of Zistersdorf Town Hall. Together with Max von Poosch, he contributed to the restoration of Karl von Blaas’s frescoes at the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum in Vienna, which had been partially destroyed by air raids.

Works by the artist are held at the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum, the Wien Museum and the Museum Niederösterreich, as well as by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture and the Austrian Embassy in London. In 2003, the Salzburger Museum Carolino Augusteum dedicated the exhibition “Hans Wulz (1909–1985). Menschen, Landschaften” to him, presenting it from 6 September to 9 November in its main building.
