Lyonel Feininger

Born : 1871Died : 1956Documented citizenships : United States

The German-American painter Lyonel Feininger (1871–1956) also worked as a caricaturist, with drawings published in several periodicals, including the Chicago Sunday Tribune. In 1913, he took part in the first German Autumn Salon, organised at the Der Sturm gallery. Six years later, Walter Gropius appointed him head of the Bauhaus graphic workshop in Weimar, impressed by a style described in the note as “crystalline”. Feininger remained associated with the Bauhaus until the institution closed in 1933.

His works were subsequently seized as “degenerate”, according to the note. From 1937, he lived in New York again. In 1944, the Museum of Modern Art devoted a retrospective to him.

Ghosties, a watercolour signed and dated 1955, measures 12 × 14.5 cm. The provenance given for this work is Galerie Binhold, Hamburg. The note specifies that the works to which it refers were neither exhibited nor sold by Feininger, but were given to members of his family or to friends.

This profile brings together identity references for Lyonel Feininger and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.

73 references are documented at Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Dobiaschofsky, Kornfeld, Germann, Lempertz, Piguet, Schuler. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
