Max Jacob

Born : 1876Died : 1944Documented citizenships : France

Max Jacob (1876–1944) worked as a poet, painter and critic at the intersection of literature and the visual arts. Born in Quimper, he settled in Paris after studying law and began a lasting friendship with Picasso in 1901. Le Cornet à dés, published in 1917, is among his major books. His spiritual exploration also informs Le Laboratoire central and La Défense de Tartufe. His painting incorporates cubist and expressionist elements; gouache was one of his means of expression, as Frau mit Steinbock demonstrates. His visual practice thus accompanied his work as a writer. A Jewish convert to Catholicism, he was arrested in 1944 and interned at Drancy, where he died on 5 March before any deportation from France could take place.
