The French painter Gustave Jacquet, born in 1846 and died in 1909, is associated with female portraiture and genre scenes, particularly those in the taste of the eighteenth century. A pupil of William Adolphe Bouguereau, he presented La Modestie and La Tristesse at the Salon of 1865. The works he showed there in the following years include the Portrait de Mlle Fanny G. Mengozzi and L’Appel aux armes in 1867, followed by Sortie d’armée in 1868.
According to the entry by Ségoura Fine Art, he enlisted in the cavalry in 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, temporarily interrupting his artistic production. He resumed painting in 1872 and thereafter exhibited every year at the Salon des artistes français. In 1878, he took part in the Exposition universelle with Portrait de femme; the Salon list for the same year also mentions Jeanne d’Arc prie pour la France. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1879. La Bienvenue was among the works presented at the Salon of 1892.
Several works are recorded in public collections. The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore holds La Conquérante, a pastel on paper dated 1885. The Château de Dieppe is given as the location of a Portrait de Camille Saint-Saëns à l’âge de 35 ans, painted around 1870; the Musée Magnin in Dijon, of La Femme à l’éventail, dated around 1870–1890; and the Musée Lambinet in Versailles, of the Portrait d’Augusta Holmès. After Jacquet’s death, the contents of his studio and his art collections were dispersed at the Galerie Georges Petit; a sale of costumes, weapons and armour from his estate took place in Paris on 29 November 1909.
