The Austrian painter Gunter Damisch, born in Steyr in 1958 and deceased in Vienna in 2016, developed a practice encompassing painting, drawing and the graphic arts, which turned increasingly towards sculpture in the last years of his life. Before studying in Vienna, he attended the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg under Claus Pack.
In Artsper’s presentation, his world is populated by invented beings, associated with a spiritual realm and with scales ranging from the biological microcosm to the macrocosm. This description accompanies a body of work spanning several media, with sculpture taking on an increasingly prominent role over the last years.
« Blaufigur + Blaustrom », a 1986 oil on canvas measuring 20 × 20 cm, provides a documented reference point in his work. Kornfeld’s record states that the reverse of the stretcher bears the signature and date « G. Damisch 86 », as well as the title. According to the provenance published by Kornfeld, the painting passed through Galerie Buchmann in Basel, where it was acquired by a private collection in Switzerland.
