Guillermo Meza Álvarez

Born : 1917Died : 1997Documented citizenships : Mexico

The work of Guillermo Meza Álvarez addresses fantasy, religion and myth; in his later works, the thoughts and traditions of Mexico’s Indigenous peoples occupy a particular place. After seeking an apprenticeship with Diego Rivera, he received from him a letter of recommendation for Inés Amor, owner of the Galería de Arte Mexicano; it was at this gallery that he presented his first solo exhibition, in 1940. That same year, he took part in the exhibition Arte Mexicano in New York and presented El cargador at the International Exhibition of Surrealism.

Commissions for murals form another part of his activity: he produced five panels for the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social in 1951, followed by Los cuatro elementos, a mural in acrylic on wood, for the Club de Industriales in 1958. He also worked for the stage, creating sets and costumes for theatrical productions from 1947 onwards; in 1977, he worked for the Ballet Trío of Alejandro Meza and the Royal Ballet Dens Norske Opera in Oslo. In 1953 and 1954, he won the first prizes in the “winter salon” competitions of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, of which he became a member.

Works by Meza are held, among other collections, by the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Among the works listed under his name, Retrato de mujer is described as mixed media on paper, signed and dated 1960, measuring 56 × 44 cm.
