Odilon Redon’s work is distinguished by a shift from drawings and prints devoted to imaginary, generally macabre subjects to oil painting and pastel, which he took up after 1880 with the encouragement of Gauguin and the Nabis. Born in Bordeaux, he trained briefly with Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Among the works listed by the Art Institute of Chicago are Guardian Spirit of the Waters, dated 1878, followed by prints related to To Edgar Poe (1882) and the series Les Origines (1883). In the latter, The Misshapen Polyp Floated on the Shores, a Sort of Smiling and Hideous Cyclops is the third plate in a series of eight; A Mask Sounds the Funeral Knell is the third plate of To Edgar Poe.
The Art Institute’s records also include works from the end of the century and the beginning of the next: Portrait of Ari Redon, circa 1898, Flower Clouds, circa 1903, Andromeda, circa 1905, and Still Life with Flowers, dated 1905. These titles show the range of subjects recorded in this corpus, from portraiture to still life, as well as floral and mythological motifs.
