Paul Hoeniger

Born : 1865Died : 1924Documented citizenships : Germany

The German painter Paul Hoeniger (1865–1924), born and deceased in Berlin and also known as Paul Höniger, became known for his scenes of everyday life, which he painted mainly after returning to Germany. He trained at the academies in Berlin and Munich, and with Franz Skarbina in Berlin. He spent time in Paris, where he learned this genre, and then made study trips from the French capital to Belgium and the Netherlands, focusing on works by old and contemporary artists. After returning to Germany, he lived in Berlin in the same building as Skarbina, at 41 Königin-Augusta-Straße.

The titles of his early drawings—« Frühmorgens zur Arbeit », « Berliner Dienstmann », « Berlin O. » and « In der Garnfärberei »—appear alongside, among the documented works, scenes and views associated with Berlin, Paris, Hamburg or Venice. Dated paintings include « Im Café Josty » (1890), « Stehender Knabe an der Küchentüre » (1892), « Pariser Damen » (1897) and « Alt-Berlin » (1899). Later titles include, among others, « Brücke am Baumwall, Hamburg » (1905) and a view of the Palazzo Dario in Venice (1911).

From 1888, Hoeniger took part in exhibitions of the Berlin Academy of Arts and the Great Berlin Art Exhibition; « Im Café Josty » attracted attention there. He then presented « Alt-Berlin » at the first exhibition of the Berliner Secession in 1899, followed by « Ein alter Winkel » and « Haltestelle (Nebelstimmung) » at the second, in 1900, the year from which he was recorded as a full member. Between 1891 and 1912, he exhibited regularly in Germany, notably at the Glaspalast in Munich, and also took part in exhibitions in Paris, including the Salons of 1895, 1898 and 1904. A sale entry describes « Hof in Lübeck », dated 1912, as oil on lined canvas, signed and titled on the reverse; it gives its dimensions as 73 × 61 cm.
