Joos van Cleve

Registered as a free master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1511, Joos van Cleve also held responsibilities there: he was appointed dean for the first time in 1519 and served as co-deacon for several years around 1520. He contributed to founding the armenbus, the guild’s assistance fund, and was appointed its dean in 1538 and 1540.

The Lempertz catalogue presents a Portrait of a Young Man as a work by Joos van Cleve: an oil painting on wood, 20 × 12.5 cm, dated 1509. The frame bears the inscription “Et mach Ghesceien”, which the catalogue translates as “Es möge geschehen”, or “May it happen”. The same catalogue mentions the portrait at the Koetser Gallery in New York in 1941 and states that it was lent to the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen in Kassel until around 2002. Four of his most important paintings bear the monogram “JB”, interpreted as most likely referring to Joos van der Beke.

The biographical source places his death between 10 November 1540 and 13 April 1541 and reports that, according to the surviving documents, he is said to have died on 4 February 1541.

This profile brings together identity references for Joos van Cleve and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
