Giuseppe Recco, born in Naples in 1634, belonged to a family of still-life painters that included his father Giacomo. He practised both painting and drawing in seventeenth-century Naples, with still life as his characteristic genre. Fish and vessels occupy an important place in the works preserved under his name. At the National Gallery of Slovenia, a canvas dated around 1670 combines fish, a basket and metal vessels; its attribution rests on comparison with signed paintings.
The Still Life with Fish at the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza in Guimarães combines three copper containers, fish and cabbage leaves. The luminous colours of the fish contrast with the dark sky and the other objects arranged within the composition.
This profile brings together identity references for Giuseppe Recco and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
